| Transmeta spins Crusoe-based Mini-ITX mobo |
Jan. 07, 2004
Transmeta introduced two new reference platforms today, to support device and system designs based on its Efficeon TM8600 and Crusoe TM5900 processors. Interestingly, the Crusoe TM5900 reference platform (pictured on the left) is implemented in the increasingly popular Mini-ITX motherboard form-factor pioneered by Via, one of Transmeta's main x86-compatible processor rivals.

The Efficeon reference platform (shown at right) incorporates NVIDIA's nForce3 Pro 250 Gb chipset, which integrates Serial ATA, AGP 8x, and Gigabit Ethernet.

Transmeta suggests using the Efficeon TM8600 System Development Kit as a starting point for developing multimedia-intensive, energy-efficient x86 applications such as notebook PCs, Tablet PCs, silent desktop PCs, high performance embedded devices, blade PCs and servers. The Crusoe TM5900 System Development Kit, on the other hand, is well suited for designs such as ultra-personal computers (UPCs), thin clients, web tablets, industrial control applications, point-of-sale terminals, portable consumer devices, set-top boxes, the company says.
Transmeta says the Mini-ITX form-factor Crusoe TM5900 reference platform implements all the functions of a complete PC system, including on-board video/graphics, audio, Ethernet, USB 2.0 ports, IrDA interface, S-Video output, and a digital S/PDIF audio output. A standard memory slot accomodates DDR DIMM memory modules. A Phoenix BIOS facilitates easy system configuration and peripheral setup. Although the TM5900 platform is primarily intended for use as a reference design, a Transmeta source said the design can also serve as the basis of commercial Mini-ITX motherboards.
Both reference platforms come with schematics, design guides, processor specifications, and device drivers. Both feature Transmeta's LongRun power and thermal management technology, the company says. The reference platforms support operation under Windows, Windows Embedded, and Linux operating systems.
Transmeta plans to begin shipping the kits in Q1 2004.
In a related story, Transmeta introduced an "Embedded System Development Kit" based on its Crusoe 800MHz Crusoe TM5800 processor, and with special attention to Windows CE .NET and Windows XP Embedded operating system support, earlier this week. Further details on that reference platform are available at WindowsForDevices.com.
